7:47 am - Back at work
|
So I'm now back at work part time - therefore I have the 2 extra minutes to update my blog. I must say that I'm loving it. Being a stay at home mom was the hardest job I've ever done. It's not just the constant 24/7 all call and sleep deprivation - it's also emotionally and physically exhausting - and Sarah is a great baby. I feel terrible for the people who have colicly babies. I never thought being at work would be my relaxation time - definitely a mentality shift. Working part-time is great -- because I get my break and feel like I'm part of society again and the next day I get to spend all day with Sarah. I think I appreciate the time we spend together more because of this. Sarah is doing great. Lots and lots of smiles. Sleeping through the night most of the time. My mom is driving me nuts yelling at me not to swaddle her anymore because she is too old. I'm trying to explain to her that Sarah is only 3 months old and doesn't have enough coordination yet to not hit herself in the face at night. I'm ignoring my mom since in general her baby advice is crappy. I'm not sure how my sister or I survived. Anyway, I need to go do work *yay*

9:53 am - Life changing event
|
It's kind of hard to summarize these past two weeks. For those of you who didn't know already, our daughter Sarah was born on November 16. I'd like to thank everyone for their congratulations. She is doing great, except that she is wide awake during the night and sleeping through the day. J and I are frazzled, but I completely melt when I look at her.

I had to work a little late yesterday. Some guys come into the lab (somebody must have let them in because it’s a locked door). I ask them if they needed help, which is the polite way of saying who the fuck are you and why are you here. They tell me that they are doing some work on the tissue culture hood and go into the tissue culture room. There is also one lone hood in the corner on the other side of the lab (this is a big lab). Everyone has moved or is in the process of moving out so I’m the only person there. I get a snack – they are not there – so I think they left. Right when I’m finishing up my testing the really nice EHS guy is strolling through the lab, sees me, and says “do you know they are decontaminating the hood on the other side of the lab”. I say no. This is a process where they seal the hood, use formaldehyde gas (read: deadly) to kill everything in the hood. They also seal the room off. EHS guy and I go up to the guys and I ask when can I get back in tomorrow. They are confused. Apparently the gas is already in the hood but they did not seal the room or tell me what exactly they were doing. I say something like “what do you think you are doing, I’m 7 months pregnant” , then leave the lab ASAP. I didn’t have any symptoms of formaldehyde exposure. But I still freak out a little, go home, almost quit my job, freak out some more at 3AM, talk to my OB – she says I’m fine. I get a call from the nice EHS guy this morning - who used his little device after I left that tests the air. He said there were no abnormal readings and that everything is fine. He is also filing a x,y and z reports – including a complaint to the company. I am beyond relieved and very happy with Harvard’s safety.

2:21 pm - Missing the target market

Why does Sigma advertise on the bus. It's a chemical/lab supply company. This bus does go from Kendall Square to the Longwood Medical area - but a majority of people on the bus are bus people -- not researchers. Seems strange.

If I had a native american name it would be "women who loses pens". There is a black hole somewhere where all my pens go.

8:31 am - Glad the week is almost over
|
So - my grandma passed away this past Sunday. It wasn't a big shock since she was almost 91 and had been in the hospital for pneumonia for the week. It's kind of a weird feeling since her quality of life was really terrible these past few years but I still wanted to hold on. The funeral was yesterday and the shi'vah was at my house. I'm glad it's over.

10:34 am - Good to be home

I'm so happy that it's May 5 - because the long list of commitments and travel is finally over. Since March we/I have had 1 business trip across the country, 1 big party, 1 ski weekend, 2 weddings, 1 Passover, 1 Founders and 1 Grandma 90th birthday in Harrisburg. This entailed 2 road trips by car and 3 trips by plane (with 1 missed connection, 2 3-4 hour delays and one canceled flight). Nothing productive has been done on my part besides going to the grocery store. The cats have gotten fat from all the food we left the weekends we were gone. I just want to take a nap. The good news is that J and I went to a tasty restaurant/bar near South Station on Friday before our flight out.

1:34 pm - strange cat
|
I go to put on my sports bra and there is a bite size hole in it. Earlier this week I've found a tank top and a normal bra that the straps have been chopped off. I think my cat feels she needs more fiber in her diet.
Such is life.
At least it forces me to put away my laundry :-)

7:44 am - Strange Parents
|
I just got an email from my Dad who is now at Antarctica on vacation. His 60th birthday was yesterday. My mom on the other hand is at Disney World and feels like she's in the Stepford Wives when they wish her a magical day. My parents are strange.
